Lament [Steam Workshop page] [Documentation]
Currently in it’s 3.x release, Lament began as a very simple mod that allowed Conan Exiles private server administrators to set various scaling death penalties. It was a passion project of mine that aimed to solve a persistent problem private server communities encountered: the base game’s penalties for dying only had two settings: players drop all of their equipped gear and inventory items, or they drop nothing. Players found these two settings either too punishing or too lenient; they wanted the ability to find a happy medium tailored to their specific gaming community.
Lament 1.0 met that demand, albeit with limited configurability and an ugly, rudimentary user interface. My 2.0 update to the mod addressed both of these issues:
Lament 1.0
Lament 2.0
Lament 3.0 - Covenants
Lament 3.0 - Detailed Help
Lament 3.0, released in 2023, is a quantum leap for the mod. It advances all of Lament’s existing features while introducing a dynamic respawn system, allowing server admins to create custom rules for death and respawn, including the creation of discreet regions where these rules can be entirely different from elsewhere in the world.
Although it boasts only modest subscription tally (44,000 and counting), Lament is by far my most sophisticated mod on a technical level, and is the work I’m most proud of. It is the culmination of everything I’ve learned about network replication, user interface design, and gameplay logic.
